Max & Iggor Cavalera Return To Their Roots In New York City

Max & Iggor Cavalera brought their “Return To Roots” tour to The Gramercy Theatre in New York City last night, and completely decimated the sold out venue. After a blistering opening set by Full Of Hell, and a crushing onslaught of death metal by Immolation, the Cavalera brothers hit the stage with Marc Rizzo and Tony Campos to perform Sepultura‘s classic Roots album, and it was better than I ever expected it to be.

From the first note of ‘Roots Bloody Roots’ to the last breakdown of the night, the energy in the room was absolutely unreal, and I completely lost my mind. The early Sepultura records blew me away as a kid, so to get to see and hear Roots in it’s entirety live was a dream come true. We’ve all heard them play some of these songs live before, but to hear ‘Ratamahatta’, ‘Straighthate’, ‘Spit’ and all the other tracks in order was powerful as hell. Plus, they ended it all with punishing covers of Venom and Motorhead.

After it was all said and done, all we could do was applaud the brothers, for not only performing an amazing show, but also for what they’ve meant to our music over the years. It was a truly a historic night for metal fans here in the city, and I am damn proud to say I was there to witness it with my own eyes.
