Marissa Nadler Shares Her Single and Video for “Hatchet Man” – New Album Coming Soon

Marissa Nadler is closing in on the release of her new album, New Radiations, due out August 15th on Sacred Bones records. Following the title track, she has now shared the second single from the record, “Hatchet Man,” along with a self-directed music video. Watch it below and read more from Marissa Nadler.

Commenting on the track, Nadler says: ““Hatchet Man” is about a sinister character bringing a woman home—not for romance, but to murder her—while the narrator, his partner, is made to witness it unfold. Ultimately, the storyteller escapes, adrenaline flooding her veins. The sweet, lilting melody of the chorus offers a stark contrast to the verses, where much of the tale is told. I enjoy twisting narratives, subverting tropes, and playing with perspective in my songs. The rest of the details are all in the song.

“Hatchet Man” is a cosmic murder ballad that paints a chilling scene. Nadler sings: “The angel made him do it and he made me watch—he thought no one would notice her gone.

The accompanying video for “Hatchet Man” was made using “cut-out shadow figures, everyday objects, liquid light show techniques and self-shot footage—much of it projected through the soft glow of an old overhead projector,” Nadler explains. “I wanted to create a surreal, crimson space for the song and its characters to live in, to tell the story without being too illustrative.” This builds on the previous video for “New Radiations” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au30lCanU8w) that was also self-directed by Nadler.

On New Radiations, Nadler’s tenth official full length record, she returns with a raw, intimate, and breathtaking collection of eleven otherworldly songs. From the first note, her lush voice and intricate fingerpicking are front and center. She layers Everly Brothers–style harmonies over dreamlike, lonesome soundscapes— fuzzed-out distortion, Hammond organ, and ominous synthesizers—that elevate her warm vulnerability with texture and atmosphere. Each track unfolds like a vignette of a life lived, delivering emotional weight with the curtain pulled back. Lyrically, she shape-shifts through time and space—inhabiting characters in an airborne Cessna, a spaceship, a getaway car, and alternate dimensions. Her storytelling is cinematic in scope and deeply personal in impact.

Produced by Nadler herself, the album was recorded in Nashville, both at Haptown Studios with the help of friend Roger Moutenot, and her home studio. Mixed by Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O)))), New Radiations features subtle, immersive arrangements from longtime collaborator Milky Burgess—woozyslide guitar, hypnagogic synthesizers, and gritty riffs that ebb and flow with oceanic intensity. In contrast to Nadler’s last two guest heavy records, New Radiations presents a more introspective and personal vision. Genre‑bending yet quintessentially her own, the album freezes the world’s noise in a moment of beauty and solemnity. New Radiations is not just another album—it’s a career highlight, a testament to Marissa Nadler’s singular vision and artistry.
