Hannah Marie Marcus is an American singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist renowned for her emotionally resonant, genre-defying music that blends elements of folk, jazz, slowcore and experimental rock. Born in NYC, she was raised in Spanish Harlem by a painter mother and a father who was a cellist and composer. Her grandfather Ernst Levy was a notable composer and pianist. Growing up alongside her autistic and developmentally disabled sister, Melissa, profoundly influenced her worldview and artistic sensibility, instilling in her a deep empathy and a fascination with alternative perceptions of reality. Marcus began her recording career after a move to San Francisco in 1989 where she plunged headfirst into the “Sadcore” scene after watching American Music Club play at a parking lot.

Over the years she has collaborated with a diverse range of musicians and bands, including Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters, Sun Kil Moon), saxophonist/composer Matana Roberts, members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, author Rick Moody and artist Nina Katchadourian. Marcus has also been increasingly active in the world of olfactory art, and just finished a 6 week solo exhibition at Olfactory Art Keller in New York City.
