Metal duo Qarinah have teamed up with Ghost Cult to debut their new music video “Alchemy!” Their new EP Transcendent drops this week. Made up of Portland-based singer-songwriter and drummer Miss Randall (Rusty Eye) and Germany-based guitarist and composer Waldemar Sorychta, formerly of Grip Inc., Voodoocult, and Enemy of the Sun, the pair envision the collaboration as an intersection between groove metal, classic metal styles, and unheard fresh possibilities. Qarinah’s Miss Randall says: “Aside from the great Waldemar Sorychta, I wanted to express my deepest admiration toward the fallen former lead singer in Grip Inc. Gus Chambers, and also Dave Lombardo, an accomplished drummer who needs no introduction. All these unique characters shaped who I am in metal and created something larger than life that I look up to: pure raw metal with emotion.” It all starts with “Hell or High Water,” a song about fighting against all odds. Then, “Impermanence” which is an honest anthem about our inevitable demise. “Not For Sale” is another tune that comes from the dissatisfaction with the societal rules when it comes to being unapologetically you. And finally, “Alchemy” talks about the stages of alchemical transformation in a human being as they are doing The Work.
Qarinah’s Waldemar Sorychta says: “This is a combination between hard grooves like Grip Inc. and melodic tunes that are working harmonically and not as opposites. Overall, the music is made with soul and passion presented with great production and heavy sound. Miss Randall’s voice brings in the heavy parts with a touch of California punk. I’m very proud of this result and there are many more written and pre-produced. This is just the beginning. ”
Waldemar and Miss Randall met at Graspop in the late 2000s, and their friendship flourished into a collaboration on Rusty Eye’s Possessor album, and finally, leading to the series of visits to Germany and Finland since late 2022 to produce and record songs as a duo. Miss Randall is an established singing drummer and song-writer in the Los Angeles/CDMX band Rusty Eye and Sergio Arau y Los Heavy Mex. Now going solo in Portland, Oregon, Miss Randall released debut singles last year, including her original NWOBHM anthem “Pagan Burial,” a Corrosion of Conformity cover of “Albatross,” an EP entitled “Desertations, Vol.1” and more. Waldemar has 3 gold records and more than 184 credits under his belt as a result of being the producer of the most successful Century Media label bands including Tiamat, Lacuna Coil, Moonspell, Samael, The Gathering, and more. He was also the lead guitarist/composer in Grip Inc. next to Dave Lombardo and Gus Chambers (who tragically passed away in 2008). He’s been busy also touring as supporting guitarist with Overkill, Therion, and Exhorder and is still producing German punk and metal bands such as The Idiots, Crossplane, and The Other.
The tracks were produced by Waldemar Sorychta and Miss Randall collaboration with mixing/mastering engineer Dennis Koehne (Sodom, Lacuna Coil, Tristania, et al), audio engineer Jan Rechberger at Helsinki Moon Unit studio (drummer in Amorphis, The Eternal), and LA-based engineer Yury Anysonyan at Box Studio (Spineshank, The Love Project). QARINAH’s name story nods at Waldemar’s productions with Samael, Therion, or The Gathering (recently certified gold), and while it’s mystical in nature, it’s not for the faint of heart, coming from the feared story of an orgone energy female succubus demon of Middle Eastern tradition.
