SoCal Psych-Folk Queen Globelamp, aka Elizabeth le Fey Dapena, debuts her newest single today “Fossils” with Ghost Cult! The dreamy and haunting song reflects Globelamp’s tasteful and unique singer-songwriter vibes and otherworldly talent, an often mood-boarded sad girl before it was TikTok trendy. Listen to the new song below!
The gorgeous and hypnotic “Fossils” was recorded at Orange Sound in Rhinebeck, NY by Ash Umhey, with contributions from Morgan Y. Evans (Walking Bombs) and Umhey. Mastering was done by the great Thomas Andrew Doyle (Tad, Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth) at Witch Ape Studio in Seattle.
“As a lifelong fan of the 90s music scene it was a real pleasure and honor to have Tad master this song,” Dapena says.
“In life sometimes people think they can get away with bad things they have done and maybe for a while it seems like they have gotten away with it. As Bob Marley said, “There aint no hiding place from the Father of Creation”.
A fossil used to be alive and was turned into an artifact by the Earth. They may have been hidden but they were always there. The same analogy can be applied to whatever you think you’re hiding from God.”
Dapena is of Puerto Rican and Polish descent and her songs are informed by her book-worthy chaotic life, time spent interning at K Records in Olympia as well as the DIY folk punk ethos. She has shared stages with Against Me!, Screaming Females, Scout Gillett and Waxahatchee (to name a few) and recently had a high-spirited L.A. show with Las Nubes. She also was featured in the Angela Izzo, Eric Zimmerman (Soundgarden’s “Jesus Christ Pose” video) avant-garde music docu-series The Bender’s Circuit, now streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
Globelamp has been compared to The Space Lady, Myrkur and Joanna Newsom and has drawn influence from a range of artists including Riot Grrrl, Jenny Lewis, Melanie Martinez and author Francesca Lia Block. She has released music previously (including 2016’s classic “The Orange Glow”) with labels such as Wichita, Nefarious Industries and Psychedelic Thriftstore Recordings. Where some pop and indie stars have to borrow the SoCal aesthetic, Globelamp alwats embodied it.
The “Fossils” single precedes a new psych folk album that is currently being finished in Tustin, CA with a hopeful release planned for 2025. It will be Elizabeth le Fey’s first since understated charmer 2018’s “Romantic Cancer.” Since that time she has battled industry sexism, survived a near death health scare and unearthed more about her previously uncertain parentage, all while continuing to make her own brand of musical magic.
