“Traveling from Richmond to Baltimore to record with Developing Nations definitely helped mold this album. Nick and I have trusty solid state gear that is typically frowned upon by true gear nerds. Kevin helped us explore some of those coveted amps for us to get pummeling tones. Just like a regional pit beef Baltimore bbq sandwich, our sound was more refined for this album but almost sloppier and simpler. We definitely didn’t use a metronome for any parts and I love that about Pyramid Mass. Something I eternally request to layer in our music are soundscapes and synths behind our tracks. We used a korg synthesizer to double some heavy lows and to build more stratus chords on top of the highs.” – Joey Anderson (bass)
Pyramid Mass (previously Doubtfire) is Matt Wild (drums/vocals), Nick Crider (guitar/vocals), and Joey Anderson (bass/vocals/synth). Formed in 2014 in Richmond, VA, Pyramid Mass was created by Nick Crider (Dumb Waiter) and Matt Wild (Hellbear). Joey Anderson (Night Idea) soon joined as the bassist. After several years of experimenting with their sound, Pyramid Mass has honed in on a more avant-garde perspective on thrash, black metal and hardcore. Drawing influence from a variety of bands including Mortiferum, Liturgy, Krallice, Birthday Party, Gorguts, Plebeian Grandstand, Caustic Wound, and Kayo Dot, Pyramid Mass focuses on a sound that rejects complicity through somber and inspiring aggression.
Monolith was recorded by Kevin Bernsten (Full of Hell, Magrudergrind, Weekend Nachos, Noisem, Pig Destroyer) with technical help from Matt Redenbo (Eyelet, War on Women, Black Lung, Misled Youth) at Developing Nations in Baltimore.
