Now celebrating their 20th anniversary, UK technical/progressive death metallers, De Profundis, have just shared a brand new music video for “I: Corruption.” The track is one of four appearing on the band’s upcoming EP, The Gospel Of Rot, due out on October 1st. Catch the new video and more below.
De Profundis describe their latest outpouring of devastating heaviness as “a manifesto against the tyranny of profit over people, where war is currency and the masses are drugged with false hope and blind faith.”
De Profundis formed back in 2005. Since then they have released six full length albums, played in 27 different countries and shared the stage with everyone from Iron Maiden to Deicide, Immolation to Rotting Christ and countless other luminaries besides. It has been an incredible career so far, but as they reach their 20th anniversary De Profundis have a lot more to say and a lot more they still wish to achieve. Having recruited new vocalist Stefano Bassi and new bassist Simon McAuliffe they are set to embark on the next chapter in their story. De Profundis have looked back to the roots of death metal, reconnected with the music that inspired and influenced them and forged the gargantuan sounds of The Gospel Of Rot!
This is a call to fight back against the degradation of human civilisation, to stop the rot that is dragging us all down to destruction. Opening with “I: Corruption” it is immediately apparent that De Profundis are taking no prisoners, that this incarnation of the band is its most vehement and ferocious to date. Their trademark incisive and fluid lead work is more incendiary than ever before, the riffs deadly, the refreshed rhythm section outstanding and Bassi’s vocals are a revelation – no formless grunting and growling, this is an imperious display that commands attention, making the overused harsh vocal style a force to be reckoned with once more. “II: Deception” and “III: Indoctrination” follow, hitting hard with formidable impact but also showing once again the meticulous attention to detail that sets De Profundis apart. Mention also has to be made of Tom Atherton’s drumming which is quite breathtaking throughout, a real tour de force of extreme metal percussion. The final song on offer is a cover of the Sepultura classic “Subtraction,* which De Profundis not only deliver with consummate skill, but make their own and fit perfectly into the concept of The Gospel Of Rot.
Due in part to the superb mixing and mastering by Matt Jones at Capsaarx Studios (Fury, Vanitas, Dakesis), De Profundis have never sounded better than they do on The Gospel Of Rot. Tactile and vibrant, textured and venomous every aspect of the band’s nuanced performance has its place in the spotlight, while the combined firepower is glorious. Complete with the superb artwork of Pierre-Alain D. of 3mmi Design (Necrodeath, Scar Symmetry, The Crawling) The new age De Profundis has begun.
