The Netflix show Black Mirror came back for season five today and one of the guest appearances is from Miley Cyrus. She shows up in the episode Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too and performs Nine Inch Nails hit ‘Head Like A Hole’ from their debut Pretty Hate Machine. According to iNews, the singer and the show’s producer got the blessing of NIN frontman Trent Reznor to do it.
In Black Mirror, the peppy, purple-haired star sings new lyrics: “Hey there, whoah-ho, I’m on a roll / Riding so high, achieving my goals / I’m so stoked on ambition and verve / I’m gonna get what I deserve.” Much more palatable to the tween audience – and a song that Rachel (played by Angourie Rice) becomes obsessed with.
Brooker says he had to get clearance from Trent Reznor from the band to use the track and to change their lyrics, but the frontman for the band was on board immediately when they pitched the idea to him.
Speaking at a press event, Brooker said: “Trent got it straight away, it was via email and he was really happy pretty quickly. He wanted to see the script and I got to re-write his lyrics in a chirpy way.
“I’m not the best lyricist in the world, in the first song she’s singing: ‘I’m stoked on ambition and verve’ instead of ‘You’re gonna get what you deserve’.”
Executive producer Annabel Jones said: “He thought it was very funny, he found the dark comedy very entertaining. There are lots of dark concepts in the film and we just enjoy that sort of childish subversion of them.”
