Glasgow, UK post/alt.rock band, Atlas : Empire, have shared the new single, “Happy As Lazarus,” their first since their 2023 album, Everything Is Temporary. It was mixed by Tom Peters (Vennart, Lakes, A Burial At Sea) & mastered by Ed Woods (The XCerts, Reuben, Vukovi), and comes with a video shot, directed and edited by Calum McMillan. ““Happy As Lazarus” is our first single since 2023s Sophomore album, Everything Is Temporary, and it pushes our sound in a heavier & more electronic-infused direction. We’ve introduced bass synths in place of bass guitar, pushed the electronic elements forward and dialled up the prominence of baritone guitar – all of which fuse together to create a darker, denser feel than a lot of our previous record. Thematically, “Happy As Lazarus” examines humanity’s growing reliance on technology & simultaneous disconnection from what’s “real” – blissfully ignorant, spiraling towards oblivion.”
Since their inception in 2011, the band has continually evolved & expanded their sonic landscape, never simply content to regurgitate the same sounds over & over. This desire for exploration has seen Atlas : Empire showcase their unique mix of alternative genres to live audiences throughout the UK, Europe, Ukraine & Canada, sharing stages with a diverse array of artists including; The Appleseed Cast, Tiny Moving Parts, Wintersleep, Microwave, Good Tiger, The Dear Hunter, Closure In Moscow, Nothing & October Drift.
In 2020, founding members & songwriters Steven Gillies & Jamie Sturt recruited former Foes drumming powerhouse, James Lorenzo, and spent the next few years meticulously crafting their finest material to date – 2023’s Everything Is Temporary. This album displayed Atlas : Empire focusing their expansive, structurally complex progressive rock into a more streamlined & vocally driven format, blending post-rock/shoegaze textures with the energy of late 90’s & early 00’s Alt.Rock & 2nd wave emo.
The band returns in 2025 with their new single “Happy As Lazarus.” The track permeates with a pure positive energy, taking the listener on a journey of explosive choruses and hazy ethereal passages. It was recorded by the band’s Jamie Sturt, except drums – recorded by Omar Aborida at Dystopia Glasgow. This latest track gives an insight into the latest incarnation of Atlas : Empire’s ever-evolving sound.
