ALBUM REVIEW: GWAR – The New Dark Ages – Pit Records

Everyone’s favorite blood spraying, semen spewing scumdogs are back with their 15th go-round. The New Dark Ages (Pit Records) is a concept album and GWAR’s second studio album to feature Blothar on vocals. Oderus Urungus was always the main driving force behind the band with a larger-than-life personality both on and off the stage. It’s been over eight years since his passing but fortunately, his presence is still felt on this album. The New Dark Ages is everything you love from your lords and masters.

For most people, their entertaining stage show comes first and it’s easy to forget that under the elaborate costumes of GWAR are some incredible musicians. The New Dark Ages features some of the bands most creative output in years incorporating plenty of classic heavy metal and punk influence on this recording. ‘Venom Of The Platypus’ even features some synth elements that actually work quite well. Who says you can’t teach an old scumdog new tricks?

The variety on this album sets it apart from their previous output. Don’t worry, GWAR has not abandoned the goofy metal chaos that they are well loved for. Songs like, ‘Completely Fucked’, ‘Mother Fucking Liar’  and the title-track already feel like they have a permanent home in the one of the band’s legendary live shows.

Blothar’s voice is a huge departure from Oderus in that Blothar has a much stronger range (nothing against Oderus here, he was one of the best frontman to ever take the stage). ‘Blood Libel’ and ‘Ratcatcher’ really highlight his voice with melodies and lyrics that stick to your skull for hours after listening. Balzac and Pustulus Maximus are no slouches here providing plenty of scorching solos and great harmonies.

The New Dark Ages may be in fact a new age for GWAR. The band seems to have settled in with their new overlord on the microphone and the new songs here reflect this. GWAR is showing no signs of slowing down here. Just like Oderus would have wanted.
