Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish singer and political activist has died. She was 56. No cause of death was revealed, although she has struggled long with mental illness and talked openly of suicidal thoughts. Her family broke the news with a press release to Irish media. With a turbulent personal life fueling her art and activism, she had as many controversies in the press as she did hit songs. The Irish singer-songwriter emerged in the mid-1980s but had a global hit song with her cover of Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U” and other hits. She was equally known for her outspoken stances against sexual abuse in the Church, he spirituality, as well as other feminist and political causes. She drew death threats after infamously ripping up Pope John Paul II’s photo on Saturday Night Live, in which the media vilified her, and few peers defended her.

When her teenage son Shane died by suicide in January 2022, she publicly threatened to take her life and was hospitalized. O’Connor tweeted that Shane “was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul,” adding that she was “lost … without him.” O’Connor, who began using the name Shuhada Sadaqat offstage after converting to Islam in 2018, saw herself as a punk musician, not a pop star, and was credited with influencing a range of vocalists. Her 2021 memoir Rememberings was a best seller. RIP.
