Music reviewers are inherently sceptical and often contrarian creatures, so when an artist arrives carrying plaudits from the grandees of heavy music, it’s hard not to default to cynicism. You’d be especially forgiven for hanging onto that cynicism with both hands when metal’s own great soothsayer, Lars Ulrich, adds his own recommendations to the mix – Ulrich labelling Arctic Monkeys as his favourite Metal band in 2012 still raises some serious questions about his take on the heavy music zeitgeist.Continue reading

Black Lung – Ancients
Those familiar with Baltimore acid-Blues combo The Flying Eyes may be blissfully unaware that two of that happy breed make up the larger share of an outfit bearing the name Black Lung. This darker-sounding trio, however, is no maelstrom of evil hostility, and has more in common with the parent band than the moniker might suggest.Continue reading
Hexvessel – All Tree
The relationship between Metal, heavy music and other genres has always been an intriguing and often intertwining one, where artists seem to fall under our umbrella without sharing obvious similar qualities. Case in point is that of Hexvessel, who despite an ever-changing output and a folky base to their sound, have intrinsic links to their native Black Metal scene that has hardly ever even encroached into the territory of distorted guitars.Continue reading

After a few years absence, the band has returned again with their new album, once again aiming high as they can. Continue reading

Among the countless commercials seen during Superbowl 53 last night, an unlikely metal band had their song featured in a commercial spot. Post-Rock Band This Will Destroy You had their song ‘The Mighty Rio Grande’ featured in Verizon’s ad for their “All Our Thanks” campaign, singling out first responders and donating money to charity. This is pretty momentous for the awesome, but the unheralded band in a sea of commercials featuring pop stars and pop culture icons. Each Superbowl ad spot reportedly cost s 5.5 million dollars per minute or air time. This Will Destroy You released a brand new album on January 11th, New Others Part One.
Astronoid – Astronoid
For all the directions and manner of subject matter that Metal music conveys, for a record to be purely joyous and sincerely uplifting, not simply fun or adrenaline pumping, is a rarity. It is this feeling that Boston, Massachusetts’ own Astronoid tap in to. Their debut effort Air came from out of nowhere and made waves in some circles, whilst criminally going unnoticed by many others, with a sound entirely of their own. Where Air was an excellent and unique debut, their self-titled (both Blood Music) follow-up is Astronoid refining and fully realising who they are.Continue reading
